The guided-missile destroyer, carrying a crew of around 300 personnel, is expected to reach the South China Sea by the end of the month. It will stay for a month and a half before returning to the US.
Its deployment was extended by six months from the start of the year, and is meant to fulfill a longstanding US commitment to provide deterrence in the region as part of the pivot to Asia strategy.
The destroyer has been operating in the South China Sea before. In April 2016, it called at the Philippines' Pag-asa Island on a routine deployment.
The battleship USS Missouri, commissioned in 1945, is the most recognizable US warship with the nickname of the “Mighty Mo.” The ship is currently based in California and is undergoing maintenance, which will take most of 2019.

The USS Dewey is a guided missile destroyer commissioned in 2016 and based in San Diego. It is equipped with the same Aegis combat system as the Missouri.
The destroyer has been based in San Diego for five years, where it takes part in multinational exercises including Cobra Gold, RIMPAC and Rim of the Pacific, Asia’s version of the RIMPAC.

RIMPAC brings together the US, Japan, Canada, Australia, Chile, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and New Zealand for large-scale naval exercises off the Pacific coast of North America. RIMPAC 2020 will take place from June 30 to Aug. 3.
One of the main objectives of RIMPAC is to boost interoperability of US forces and military allies. A number of naval vessels take part in the war games, with a heavy focus on modern equipment and aircraft. Some 1,000 US sailors will take part in RIMPAC 2020.
